Understanding SIBO: Causes, Symptoms, and Natural Support.

If you struggle with bloating, IBS symptoms, or unexplained fatigue, Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) might be the missing piece of the puzzle. Recently, I’ve had several clients present with these symptoms in my clinic, so I wanted to shed light on what SIBO is, why it happens, and how to support your gut naturally.

 

What is SIBO?

 

SIBO occurs when bacteria that should reside in the colon overgrow in the small intestine. Normally, our digestive system has a built-in cleansing mechanism called the Migrating Motor Complex (MMC), which helps move bacteria down into the colon. However, when this process is impaired, bacteria linger in the small intestine, fermenting food and causing uncomfortable symptoms.

 

Symptoms of SIBO

 

SIBO symptoms can vary from person to person, but common signs include:

  • Bloating and excessive gas

  • Diarrhoea or constipation (or alternating between both)

  • Abdominal cramping

  • Reflux or heartburn

  • Fatigue and brain fog

  • Food sensitivities

  • Nutrient deficiencies, particularly iron and B12

  • Joint pain and headaches

 

These symptoms can also overlap with other digestive and hormonal issues, so it’s important to get a proper assessment if you suspect SIBO.

 

What Causes SIBO?

 

Several factors can contribute to the development of SIBO, including:

 

  • Low stomach acid: Food isn’t properly broken down without enough stomach acid, creating an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive.

  • Slow digestion and motility: Conditions like hypothyroidism or diabetes can slow gut movement, allowing bacteria to accumulate.

  • Chronic stress: Stress reduces digestive function and impairs the MMC’s ability to sweep bacteria out of the small intestine.

  • Gut infections and immune dysfunction: Viral infections like Epstein-Barr or low Secretory IgA (a key immune component in the gut) can increase SIBO risk.

  • Hormonal imbalances: High oestrogen levels can slow digestion and reduce bile acids, which have antimicrobial properties that help control bacterial growth.

 

Testing for SIBO

 

If you suspect SIBO, a breath test measuring hydrogen and methane levels after drinking a glucose solution is the best diagnostic tool. A spike in these gases suggests bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine. Book a call with me if this is something that you are interested in.

  • Eat mindfully: Chew your food thoroughly and take your time with meals.
